How Calm City Drive was made
Calm City Drive asks a simple question: what if you could drop into any street in the world and just drive? The answer is OpenStreetMap. The game asks for the road network around a location, then builds a 3D city from it in your browser.
Buildings and vehicles are assembled from simple 3D shapes with realistic-looking materials using Three.js, which keeps the whole thing light enough to run on a laptop or phone. Night mode adds street lights that glow along the road.
To be kind to the free map servers, a small PHP service on this site caches road data, so popular places load fast and the maps are not hit again and again.
